The design and construction of a Montessori inspired playroom for a private client.

We were approached by the client to create the playroom for their home after they visited one of the children’s clubs we had previously designed.

Our director, Joanna Simpson, has a particular passion for designing spaces for children, having studied Montessori teaching methods after completing her architecture education. Montessori teaching puts the built environment and self-directed learning at the centre of a child’s development, and we took inspiration from this model in the implementation of the space.

We created a playroom that was colourful and fun but also elegant, decorated in Little Green Paint Co’s ‘Slaked Lime’, ‘Windmill Lane’ and ‘Ho Ho Green’ tones. It’s somewhere that both children and parents alike should be able enjoy spending time.

The play activities designed into the space are diverse and flexible, incorporating a climbing and soft play area, art zone, book corner and two-storey playhouse. The playhouse is intended to be regularly transformed to further promote imagination and creative play: one week it could be an ice cream shop, the next a fire station. We believe the smaller details matter, and took time to select every book, toy and art supply for the room.

As part of our MadeBy offering, we built a bespoke table and bench set using English ash and completed the scheme with a selection of designer lighting options, from Flos, Artemide and Verner Panton.

The playhouse is modular in nature, meaning it can be regularly transformed into an exciting new space imagined by the children. Today it’s a shop.

A diverse range of additional play areas - from ball pit to art department - are incorporated.
