Timber Options for Sauna.

13th August 2020

Whilst designing a sauna for an existing client’s garden, we really got stuck into our research on Scandinavian design and the strengths and weaknesses of different timbers.

In preparation for the detailed design, we had a CPD from experts in the field, Finnmark Ltd. As a team, we learnt about the principles of detailing a sauna; considering airflow, heat transference, and which materials would be most suitable to use.

There are many considerations when specifying products in a Sauna and none more important than the timber. Our client, having had a sauna before, wanted a finish that would give off a beautiful smell but also withstand the hot temperatures and weather well. We shortlisted many timbers, some of which needed to be thermally treated to remove all the sap, nutrients and liquid to prevent rot and fungi growth. As the sauna was to be located within a timber-clad outbuilding, we were keen to use the same timber on both the interior and exterior of the building, with a beautiful natural grain and patina.

We settled on Cedar for its smell in the heat and ability to withstand high temperatures, it's also a great cladding solution that will weather to a beautiful silver-grey over time.
